Truly, the Year of the Linux Desktop is finally upon us! Comrade 05/08/2020 (Fri) 00:24:07 No. 1635
<Between the months of March and April 2020, Windows 7 saw a drop in user market share from 26.23 percent to 25.59 percent. That’s hardly surprising for a 10-year-old, unsupported OS as people finally upgrade to Windows 10. Right? Despite that conventional thinking, Microsoft’s Windows 10 actually experienced a rare drop in market share (down to 56.08 percent in April from its March 2020 share of 57.34 percent). Meanwhile, popular Linux distribution Ubuntu enjoyed an explosive increase. <Canonical's Ubuntu Linux OS saw astonishing gains in marketshare, while WIndows 10 slumped NASEEF FOR JASON EVANGELHO <How explosive? Ubuntu’s overall share of operating system usage ballooned from 0.27% in March to 1.89% in April. To put that in perspective, that’s an increase of 599 percent. <The lift for Canonical’s Ubuntu resulted in Linux usage climbing from 1.36 percent to 2.87 percent. And to frame that up against an interesting Apple data point, NetMarketShare measures macOS Catalina — which also gained user share in April — at 4.15 percent. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2020/05/06/windows-10-is-bleeding-users-while-ubuntu-linux-enjoys-an-astonishing-increase/ We did it, reddit!
Kinda makes sense, it's cheaper for companies to just put Ubuntu than to upgrade to Windows 10 (I think). Also, steam making gaming easier in linux must have been a factor too tbh.

>>1636 >Gahnoo + Leenecks is good for cappies FREETARDS ON SUICIDE WATCH
>>1635 >One reason, as WindowsLatest points out, could be the COVID-19 pandemic and a significant decrease in company-owned PCs being used at the office. Makes sense tbh. The market share watcher methodology is pretty suspect in general since a large share of the PCs that end up being captured by it are not owned by the people who use them. Potentially explosive take: most of the remaining Win7 market share is companies/government offices who don't give enough of a shit to upgrade.
>>1637 So? Doesn't mean proles can't use it. >Industry is good for cappies Guess we need to go full anprim guys. >>1639 >most of the remaining Win7 market share is companies/government offices >assuming they're not using XP LMAO, your health records can be leaked any moment now. https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-xp-why-hospitals-are-still-using-microsofts-antique-operating-system/

>>1640 >So? Tell that to all the Gahnoofags who think that somehow porky won't collect their data if they use 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸Linux🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 and other 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸open source🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 software.
>>1644 >somehow porky won't collect their data if they use 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸Linux🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 and other 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸open source🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 software. try to read source code for once and stop being a major fag
>>1636 >it's cheaper for companies to just put Ubuntu than to upgrade to Windows 10 Isn't upgrading to Windows 10 free for Windows 7 users? I think this shift has more to do with server costs in general.
>>1653 >muh source code ever heard of binary blobs? Unless you go full freetard autism, you're still being spied on. In fact if your browser runs scripts by default you're already compromised.
>>1669 Lmao are you joking or are you not aware of how dumb you come across?
>>1671 fuck off cia nigger
>>1673 The irony
>>1675 imagine being a literal cia shill lmao
>>1676 You don’t have to imagine
>>1683 Neither you do, glowie.
>>1684 The retard has fallen in love with the glowie!
>>1654 It is free, but not everyone is aware of that. You have to dig a little to find how. In my case I had a pirate copy so I pulled a license key off an image I found on ebay.
>>1654 M$ pushed win10 hardcore with free upgrades to win7 users; I believe the upgrades could even go through without user consent cause they really wanted people on win10. That being said, the ceased the free upgrades like a year after release I wanna say. I think they are still available in a semi-secret way, as M$ still offers free win7-win10 upgrades for the disabled or something, but literally anyone can just click the link on that page of their website and get the upgrade.
>>1721 The free upgrade was still available as of December when I used it. I had to dig a little to find out how though. They aren't advertising it and probably only have it available as part of some agreement with the government or something. I've honestly liked a lot of the changes 10 makes aside from spying even more intrusively. One should really only use it for gaming if at all.
>>1644 Linux and some computer and surveillance literacy goes a long way. Tor + nftables/iptables + netstat + Wireshark = way better than any other OS. You can configure your firewall to only allow through Tor and block everything else.
>>1637 butthurt pro-proprietary software fag from the other thread
>>1669 Correct. Now quit bitching about autism and install Guix.
>>1864 Can you really use Guix as a daily driver? I know it has a lot of packages but I used my computer for mostly entertainment. Does it have Pale Moon, Kody, Youtube DL GUI, Handbrake and KeePass?
You can always just compile Palemoon I suppose.
>>1897 failmoon
>>1900 Better than the competition.
>>1894 It has icecat and ungoogled-chromium.
>>1900 I can't imagine someone unironically using firefox after armagaddon.
