Just spitballing but I'd guess Maupin's attempt to create an American Dengism emerges from the limitations of PSL/WWP Marcyism (Maupin was a former WWP member right?) which I think is probably in decline. American MLism is a bit bizarre and seems like it diverged quite a lot from other countries, with the Marcyists known for their unqualified defense of all existing socialist states. But this seemed like it lacks an affirmative program to change conditions in the U.S., and became laser-focused on just defending those states against U.S. imperialism. A noble goal, yes, but reflexive of a defensive crouch American communists found themselves in. At worst, these groups come across as like cargo cults. The PSL doesn't ask too many questions about the actual nature of the Chinese system, they just uncritically support it against the U.S., whereas Maupin is literally pro-China in terms of the actual system and wants the American people to emulate it in their country.
imo it seems like U.S. MLism (really, Marcyism) is being pulled in two directions -- toward Dengism in one direction so can fully embrace the Xi Jinping memes unironically, and on the other hand, going full anti-revisionist Hoxhaist and getting to work on constructing that bunker in your backyard.
