Welcome to /hobby/, plus mod feedback thread!

Hello everyone, and welcome to /hobby/! This topic will serve as an introduction as well as the mod feedback area. I know that some people were not on board with our decision to merge the boards, but please give it a chance and hopefully you will find it to be as comfy as where you used to hang out, but with more population. In addition, Comrade King has kindly volunteered to migrate over all the topics that have had activity in the last few weeks so you can continue your conversations.

However, I want to stress that this board should be treated as a clean slate and you should make use of the freedom that it allows. In this space feel free to make topics about any kind of hobby, entertainment, passtime, interest or vocation. These topics don't have to be related to leftism, though of course you should feel free to do so if you would like. Overall, this board is intended to give refugees of 8chan somewhere to post about their favourite interests without having to go into whatever new skinhead-infested DoD honeypot is created to replace it. An example of the kind of topic that might be encouraged is to start a topic discussing your favourite workout routines or recipes, or discussing an interesting movie that has recently been released. We would encourage people to put effort into their OPs however, as one line shitposts might be more comfortable on /GET/.

As we have merged other boards in order to create /hobby/, we would like to remind all users that it is possible for more boards to be created in future out of /hobby/ if they demonstrate a good user count/post volume such that they would be able to support a board on their own.

Overall, the moderation standards here are similar to the ones on /leftypol/, and I have included their manifesto for reference, with the exception that posts do not have to have a political slant or basis. I hope you will all enjoy this board together and that we can have some good conversations.

F2P Combat Autism Games

Hello everyone, after some serious temptation due to watching various militaria channels for some months I think I'm gonna finally jump on the bandwagon and try WT/WoT. Does anyone have experience with these kind of games? How badly exactly am I gonna get fucked by premium/longtime players? I did some searches and it seems most people agree that WT is much more realistic and simulator-y than WoT which is good cause I'd like to try realism. So, that's the one I'm downloading right now, but does anyone else have a different opinion on it? In addition, I know there's probably a huge amount of affiliate new member deals out there but does anyone know what one is the best I can use currently, ideally linked to a good YT channel that deserves it? If not I can just search for it but hey. General advice for getting started (or why I shouldn't)?

Can we get an /x/ thread going for any and all weird shit, serious or not? Since this is probably a majority materialist board, skepticism is welcome as well. As a kid I was really fascinated by stuff like the paranormal and ufology. Not much of a believer anymore but every now and then I'll read about someone's experience or see a photo or something which causes me to pause and think there might be more to the universe than we think. Anyways, I just started playing Deus Ex and it got me back into that sort of mindset. Figured I'd make a thread and see if any anons were interested.

Music Theory

I want to understand how you're supposed to play songs on piano. From what I've seen so far, you play the melody with one hand and with the other hand you play the chords, either as full chords or arpeggios. But how do you know which chords you have to play to fit a certain melody? I already know a bit of music theory so I tried figuring it out on my own. I looked up Katyusha on piano to see which chords are played. The song is in D minor, and they play the chords in this order: Dmin x3 Amaj 2nd inversion x4 (Db E A) Dmin x 2 Fmaj 1st inv. (C F A) Gmin 1st inv. (D G Bb) Dmin, Gmin 1st inv. , Dmin, Amaj inv. , Dmin. I assume that some chords are inverted so that the transition between them is smoother. They play the same melody on the right hand side throughout the video, but in the beginning they only play the root notes of the chords with their left hand, after that they play the chords in different ways, and then they play the complete triads. And this is my question, how do you know which chord progression fits over a melody? I tried to see if the chord degrees had anything to do with it. The chords in the key of D minor should be: Dmin (i), Edim (ii dim), Fmaj (III), Gmin (IV), Amin (v), Bbmaj (VI), Cmaj (VII). I imagined in simpler songs like this one you only needed to play chords from the key, but here they use an Amaj (A Db E) instead of an Amin (A C E), and I listened to the song with both an Amin and an Amaj, and I think it sounds better with the Amaj. I guess because when a G is played in the melody over the Amaj it forms an Amaj7 which creates more tension. I also tried writing the chord progression: i - i - i - V V - V - V - i i - III - iv - i iv - i - V - i but I can't really tell if this has anything to do with the melody. So if I take another simple melody like Bella Ciao for example, can I figure out what chords to play from just that? Or do I just try to see which chords sound good over it? I guess what I want to know is in which way the notes in the melody relate to the notes in the chord progression? >tldr: how does music work

Films You Just Watched Thread

Hello, the most recent movie threads have seemed a bit unfocused, this thread is for the discussion of movies we just watched and other anon's takes on them. So, without further ado I'll begin. I just watched Parasite last night, it was pretty good I think, but not as cutting edge or witty as I was expecting. I thought it was a bit unfocused and threw a lot at the wall to see what stuck, but on the other hand, it was fun and more interesting than most. A solid 8/10. I do an IMDB rating for each film I watch, for my own reference mostly, but you can see each film I watched lately and my rating if you're curious or want to ask about them. If other anons have something similar feel free to post.

Is Berserk the most based and redpilled anime?

Let's see >Guts is a low ass commoner bastard born from a corpse, meant to die, raised in a hellish world (that's literally just the same as our own before Guts encounters any actual demons) so harsh and cruel he likely has severe PTSD by the time he's 15 >Best friend Griffith is a social climbing piece of shit who has to murder and scheme to almost make it to the top, even then the ruling class tells him to go fuck himself and he has to sell his soul to the devil and murder all his friends to finally make it >The ruling class are mostly monsters; the King is a pedophile nut that tries raping his own daughter, the "nicest" nobles were wrapped up in a brutal inquisition >The whole world is ruled by an impersonal, most amoral entity created by human will but superseding all humans, controlling their lives based on it's own whims which are of course encouraged by the worst human impulses >The thing everyone worships is literally evil itself >Even the leaders of the apostles are pawns of the Market, err...."Idea of Evil" Fuck it The godhand are the bourgeoisie The apostles are the petit bourgeois Fuck yea

Seventeen Moments of Spring

This Soviet TV series is probably the best TV show ever made. It is pure кино and deeply anti-fascist, anti-imperialist, and anti-USA. It's about a Soviet spy sabotaging peace talks between the OSS and Himmler (to allow the USA and Nazi Germany to team up on the USSR). It was made at the request of the head of the KGB. Is it just me or are most jobs in IT utter bullshit? I am not referring to "Bullshit Jobs", the book. It's something different. Take say twitter. The mobile twitter front-end in particular. What is twitter? Chunks of text with occasional hyperlinks, pictures and videos. There are also a couple of forms, to register, to submit a tweet, to report stuff, etc. So again, it needs text, pictures, links and forms. All of that is supported by HTML directly, i.e. it doesn't even require a single line of javascript to accomplish that. But judging from the fact that on an old phone twitter may take half a minute or more to load or it may actually fail to load, or freeze up while loading, and taking in account how generally sluggish it is, it's obivous that it isn't plain html. In fact, there's probably a good dozen of megabytes of JS and CSS code, and that is after compression. The code that nobody every asked for. "Yeah I'd really like some people to spend their time writing thousands (?) of lines of code just to provide me with a site with the exact same functionality but with way poorer performance" - said no user ever. Bloated frontends should actually push users away it'd seem, and they probably do to some degree, that's why e.g. nitter and exist. And this doesn't only apply to twitter. The same with youtube (there exist even more alternative front-ends, hooktube and invidious and there probably are more). The same with the vast majority of sites on the web, actually. There are countless frameworks like React or Angular, that achieve the same thing as can be achieved using regular HTML and some js, but they make websites slower AND require people to develop them AND people to learn them. And by the way AFAIK nitter or invidious devs aren't paid anything for creating the sites, they might receive donations but that's it isn't it So who profits from the labour of those who develop such sites? Why would the capitalists behind e.g. twitter be interested in a) Paying more people b) Making the site less attractive to users, thus potentially reducing their profits.

Game Design

Aren't video games a most perfect realization of the spectacle? I fail to think of anything which has made a "concrete inversion of life" so effectively as video games. More than this it seems to exhaust all who play them of the tribulations of life there by converting them into the most significant population of last men to date. Recognizing this it follows that video games are only useful to the extent to which we can make games capable of waking their viewer to the theft of their life by the bourgeoisie, both in terms of surplus value extraction, and in terms of the spectacle.

It's entirely possible that many here could team up to make a game capable of waking its viewers to the theft of their life by the bourgeoisie, both in terms of surplus value extraction, and in terms of the spectacle. While making a quality 3D game is much more challenging it is possible to get good results with GPL engines as that screen shot shows. Even if nothing else it is a productive direction for leftists with this affliction to pursue, and on a personal level resist the spectacle and alienation.

Any ideas for plot or mechanics of a game of this sort?

The novel was released in 1984 and is widely considered to be one of the founding works of the science fiction subgenre known as “Cyberpunk“. Gibson himself is a bit of a legendary figure, having coined the phrase “Cyberspace”. Gibson is also widely credited with having “predicted” everything from the world wide web, google class, unisex fashion, bay area gentrification, the gig economy, etc...

Generic advice for learning a European language

Before you learn anything else, learn how the various letter combinations are usually pronounced. For example, in English -tion is pronounced like shn for some reason, and in German it's pronounced like -tsyon. German sp is pronounced like the shp in hashpipe, and there are many other regular patterns like that. Autistically drill down this stuff BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE (I know I repeat myself).
>B-but anon, I can open any book introducing a language and it starts with a bit of that
I DON'T MEAN JUST A BIT. Try to get to the point where you can read something without an accent while you still don't have the faintest idea what the text is even about, reading it like a native when he encounters words he does not know and just follows the most usual pronunciation patterns of his language.

Suppose you don't do that, how do you learn the spelling and pronunciation of a word then? It will take much longer since it will seem to you like there's a big arbitrary element in the way the words are written – meaning a ton of rote memorization – and only after a lot of memorizing work will the regular patterns slowly reveal themselves. But if you start with drilling the regular patterns, the part of the writing system that looks arbitrary to you will be much smaller. It will be much easier then to guess how something is written just by hearing and it will be much easier to remember words.

I'm sick of seeing stereotypical "california lifestyle" shit in concept cars. Here's a few examples: Yes, the examples are a bit dated but the dated nature of them just shows how stupid this all is. And, as it directly pertains to Leftism: in the 1930s the government created a specific architecture for rural areas, known as National Park Service Rustic. NPSR-national is just a styled blend of everything, but it was adapted by California's government for various uses around the state: in the north CA Park Rustic tends to lean towards clapboard-looking shacks while south of Fremont (a notable place, it's where the first railroads went through to Oakland) they went for plaster-based spanish designs. Both prominently feature the state's colors: white, red and brown. Spanish buildings trended red while Norcal ones trended brown. Why does this matter to leftists at all? Well in transportation specifically these colors were used to create what is now Caltrain's logo, back when the state government decided to just take over service completely from it's disinterested private operator, Southern Pacific. Notably SP's first class passenger colors were silver and red, and this transition marked an important step in American cultural development as (wait for it) Americans, including stereotypically rural ones that voted for Reagan all six times, voted for the government to provide a service that private industry was unwilling to continue. This was a hard fought victory, while Amtrak had already existed at that point this was a step in forcing the President to not stop Congress from buying Amtrak their own equipment (at the time, Amtrak was still using 30s-era legacy cars given over per the terms of it's creation). On a similar point, same goes for SF's Muni whose choice of grey/red reflects the growth of Norcal's economy relative to LA's; Muni's old yellow/white paint existed in response to LA's rise and LA is associated with warmer colors. None of this is referenced in automobile concept cars, because car concepts are what companies want people to be and not what they are. Though I find it ironic that with all the concept RVs, none of them depict the reality of RV homelessness which is propane tanks, small generators and a strong septic smell. In short as all this godawful bullshit over trying to make a "Californian" car happens, California already built itself it's own railway so to speak. And this happened while everyone was still drinking the oil industry's spookery about communism. The current attempts at making a "California" cultural automobile are as stupid and ridiculous as trying to make a "California" cultural soda can or "California" cultural mobility scooter. It pisses me off. By the way, pic related is what Californian architecture was from 1950-2000: a 10-lane freeway built on top of cut down railroad (originally it was four tracks, turned into four after a nearby tunnel fire). In LA I-10 flanks the Sunset Route.

Do not buy items from sellers on eBay if they do not have an excellent reputation. On the web-site you can find copies of coins and badges that cost $10 each but people sell them as originals, so you are not safe even when buying cheap items. There are also web 1.0 style forums for professional collectors and dealers, like this one
they are quite good and many people on them have decades of experience in collecting. These forums function like auctions and they are also very useful if you want to find out for free if your jewelry/coin/whatever is fake, or just take a look at people's collections.

Is poetry dead?

Button "Poetry" kept getting aggressively recommended to me in ads on Facebook, so I decided to check it out, and I have come to the conclusion that it is the most vapid psuedo-intellectual bourgeois spectacle I have ever seen (pic related) Libs eat that shit up when the poems aren't even well-written because it tells them what they want to hear. Sure, you can like what a "poem" is talking about, but that doesn't make it a good "poem", and the stuff they talk about is basic bitch lib shit anyway like "a cashier looked at me funny once at the grocery store, it was probably because I'm LGBT". Or stuff about muh depression. Newsflash; we're all depressed, honey. It's hard not to be in a society this alienating. If this is what's considered good modern poetry, can poetry be saved, or is it dead and buried? All of the examples of modern "poetry" that I can think of are similarly vapid, but I am very okay with being proven wrong.

How to set up linux for tor usage.

I posted this in another thread but I think it deserves its own thread.

I've been seeing a lot of people saying that installing tor is super hard and difficult, and, even if you use windows it's not that hard. All you have to do is install the tor browser and go into the browser bundle files and run the executable for tor, or, just use the browser bundle.

Like it's not hard at all.

But, being the pros (and dirty commies that we are) we don't use fucking bourgeois Microsoft.

So, I've set up a super simple and comprehensive guide to installing and using tor like a pro on Linux.

This is why we use Linux.

Downloading tor:

ctrl+alt+t: Open terminal:

Sudo apt install tor
sudo service tor start

Downloading and setting up privoxy.
sudo apt install privoxy

Edit the config file:

vim /etc/privoxy/config

(If you don't have vim sudo apt install vim)

add in text at the bottom:
(vim insert mode: press I)

forward-socks5 .onion 9050

(press escape)

Type :wq (write quite)

Done, ammo loaded cannons ready to fire.

Set up firefox to use tor:

about:preferences: Network settings, Use custom proxy

(Privoxy runs on port 8118) 8118
Check off "Use this proxy for all protocols"

Takes literally 5 seconds and you don't have to inconvenience yourself by downloading a whole brand new fucking browser ONLY for the simple task of bouncing around encrypted packets through a bunch of proxies.

You also don't have to live with the hellscape that is Microsoft and the billions of exploits and bugs in and written for it. (Not to mention back doors.)

And before anyone starts bitching; Setting up firefox for privacy isn't that difficult.

Basically turn off all telemetry and geo location, referer headers (but you will need http refer headers for 8chan) and some other shit, Guide here:

But honestly none of that even matters unless you are a windows user or a pedophile and let's hope you aren't either one of those.

Have a nice day.

Lets Make a Imageboard - /hobby/ edition

With the official locking of >>>/tech/ I'm moving my development log thread here. Feel free to ask questions, make comments, or pass on your suggestions. Much of the template is now complete, the CSS is responsive, usable on every browser that has rem support, and only 3815 bytes. There is still some work to be done which I'll mention in a reply following this. As it stands the plan is to start programming the back-end in OCaml this Monday leaving the finishing touches in the front-end for a later date.

front-end principles
The site should be minimalist. Adding elements unnecessarily makes everything more difficult to implement for and slower.

The site should be responsive. I don't own a device with a touchscreen, but they are omnipresent, and there is no reason that you shouldn't be able to use a website with your touchscreen device well.

The site should be compatible. I'd like to see support for more or less every desktop platform since ~2000 (this is easily done with MyPal PaleMoon, and TenFourFox) and more or less every "smart device" ever.

Text formatting should be subtle and compose as expected. There should be nothing that would feel be out of place in a book or article.

Web-fonts should not be used. Web-fonts don't improve the usability of the site but increase bandwidth usage and hinder performance for users.

JavaScript should only be used for progressive enhancements and as much of the site as possible should work without it. A Complete list of features which will require JavaScript are: automatic copying of text into the reply form, automatic refreshing of the page along with title notifications, and moving the second reply form.

/leftypol/ TV

We can watch stuff together on cytube. The nazis have their own channel, why shouldn't we?

Right now there are prolekult documentaries on, some Soviet kinos, random classics, basically stuff I could find on youtube. But I will be uploading movies as time goes on.

>Why does it take long to upload a movie?
Movies are hosted on google drive. Google has an algorithm that compares the hashes of uploaded videos to hashes of known pirated copies of movies. So public torrent releases that you find on rarbg and tpb get flagged quickly and removed. To avoid this, a downloaded movie has to be transcoded (I only have a 4c/4t ryzen 3200g). The movie is then uploaded to google drive (this is the part that takes the least amount of time) and once it is uploaded Google has to process the video so that it can be streamed/watched (this can take anywhere from an hour to a day).

Feel free to suggest movies and shows you'd like to see and I will slowly add them.

If you register your nick with cytube (no email required, just username and password) I'll make you a mod so that you can adjust the playlist, change movies, etc.

My CityState review

This is copypasted from /leftypol/, in case it gets deleted over there for offtopic or whatever.

Hello, I played the game for a good 10 hours (though half of that time I was only half playing and watching YT) so I can report back on how it went.

Overall, the comments that other people made are correct, it is impossible to play the game as a communist. I was of course expecting the abstractions of playing a Neolib citybuilder attempted to model communism, but I wasn't expecting how broken the game's core systems are.

I started out the game but quickly realised that in this game, you can't build a bridge over a river that is more than 1 tile wide. So, I nuked my save and went back to the terraforming stage.

After modifying the map some, I built a tiny little commie hamlet, with all lower class (that's what they're called in this game) trailer parks. I found it kind of funny how lower class residential buildings always have grey wasteland type terrain around them, even when they instantly are building on a fresh green forest, as if their slovenly ways drain the life from the very soil around them and they instantly create a trashpit to live in.

The game's systems are quite oblique, and there's no construction of for example power or water infrastructure, or schools, police, firefighters, so to increase living standards I had to just pop up the sliders in the economy tab for "healthcare" "education" and "security and justice".

Anyway, we quite quickly reached 'Utopian' level living standards, which I was quite happy with, but things didn't seem to be quite working as I would have liked. My answers to the political issues that had been coming through had not exactly endeared me to the upper classes, which I wasn't really expecting, but what I had overlooked was that this game diverges from Simcity 4's mechanics.

You see, in Simcity 4, you have Residential, commercial, and industrial demand, and then each of those has lower, middle, and high income demands. So for example, you can have a city with almost all lower and middle income residents but have plenty of fancy high income tech factories and the like.

However, in Citystate, there is only lower, middle, and upper income demand, and commercial and industrial buildings can't grow above the first tier of development without middle and higher income demand. So, if no upper class people want to live in your city, your factories can't grow to higher levels.

This left me a bit stuck for knowing what to do, but things had become even worse, because my open borders policy for the past years had led to a quickly spiralling problem of 'informal settlers'. Essentially, through a combination of factors I didn't really understand, almost all immigrants had settled in slum tiles that popped up rather than in growing my residential tiles to higher levels.

Eventually I noticed that there were even little 'caravan' tiles of a crowd of migrants that would come in from the sides of the map to your city and then create a new slum tile. Apparently, one way to deal with this issue is by building walls or army bases but I didn't do that, obviously. I eventually made a concession to the gravity of the situation and put my immigration policies to neutral, but the damage had already been done, and my city now had about 80,000 slumdwellers, which was more than the entire employed workforce that lived in residential areas. My 'quality of life' meter still read 'utopian', yet the majority of people were unemployed and living in favelas. My city was in a death spiral, and I was now losing a lot of money each month. What could I do?

I just started, apparently doing a session of this a day can help you quit drinking. its like a miracle. The way you play is you push the button when the sequence repeats however many times back. So it starts with 1 back, which is easy, you just gotta remember the very last position and letter. Then it goes to 2 back and its a lot harder on your attention span.

Anons, help us make something great.

Bunker Media is a project to make a blog and a small podcast/radio show with a background playlist of laborwave and fan-made music based on a Wordpress-based website. We need writers, musicians, editors, translators, programmers, and listeners. We're planning on reporting on news, theory, practice, book discussion, and maybe other stuff besides.

Bunkerchan Movie Night

So now that we finally have a general entertainment board...

People have expressed interest before in doing a Bunkerchan movie night. This is a thread to discuss that and to post any planned streams (Hoxha might want to sticky this).

So first of all: I'm not going to stream shit unless people show up. That being said, I can't stream every week at a time that works for everyone even if I wanted to, so if anyone other than me is able to stream and willing to, you should post here.

I'm also wondering what sorts of things people would want to watch. People have in the past talked about doing lefty themed movies and documentaries, but I think that'd be kind of limiting if it was all we streamed.

what does bunkerchan think of the Freespace series, meaning descent freespace 1 & 2 plus the expansion silent threat for the original.

Freespace 2, and its open source version remains to this day the crowning achievement of the "Space Sim" genre which it has never really topped, despite having come out over 20 years ago

the storyline is essentially a less personalized version of mass effect, or more accurately mass effect is ripping off descent freespace since it came out like 10 years later. Dead space also has similar lovecraftian themes

Spooky movies for Samhain!

Happy halloween fellas (not for me because i'm not doing anything particularly fun or exciting today). I came up with a list of movies you might wanna watch today. Suggested by other people of course.
I haven't seen most of these movies in this list, but these are supposed to be good spooky movies/documentaries.
Wild wild country
Going Clear
Jesus Camp (i saw this one, it's pretty good)
Holy Hell
Kentucky Teenage Vampires[Embed]
The Keepers
We Need To Talk About Kevin

The Hostel - I saw it, it didn't scare me much. It might appeal to other people though. It's more of a "getting kidnapped and raped a brutally murdered" kind of thing.
Angel Heart
The Fourth Kind - Only saw it partially, i think it maybe had some spooky scenes but it was years ago and i need to rewatch.
Noroi The Curse - I actually saw the full thing. I highly recommend it, subbed of course because dubbed japanese entertainment loses the emotion in the voice.
La Voyage Dans La Lun
The Demonic Tapes (british horror film)
Ju-on the grudge (the japanese version) - I saw this one too, but don't remember enough to tell you how good it was.
Antichrist (the film)
Annihilation ( was interested in it a few months ago, it had some legit unsettling shit in it, but i can't see how it'd be a full on horror thing since some of it seems too artsy)
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Thing (the original not the prequel)
The Exorcist (maybe that's a normie movie, i don't know, i haven't seen it but it's gotten a lot of praise over the years)

Aside from that list you should watch the poughkeepsie tapes. It's pretty good. Also give REC a try. Not Quarantine though, REC. Also the original blair witch project.
That's all i got.

Well, throne of eldraine dropped and, I have to say, this is probably one of the most impressive sets i've seen come from wizards in a while.

Other than the push on all the whales and timmies there's some good things in this; genuinely unique stuff.

The alternative art/border cards really do look amazing.

But let's get down to business:

Right now, with the current format and meta change I would say that blue red and green on really on top right now. Blue has some great control and red/green has just been astoundingly fast. I have been hitting for almost ten by turn 3-4. Red was also blessed with some control in the form of Opportunistic dragon.

You throw some pelt collectors in and some Bonecrusher Giants and you are looking at some serious threats being placed on the field.

Right now I am running a Red/Green beat down deck. It's not optimized, but, it is running smoothly.

Anyone else getting into standard right now? What are some of your thoughts and opinions?/Strategies?

gaming on linux

do you guys think gaming on linux is picking up steam in 2019?

- Steam games on linux/SteamOS: more native titles than ever and protondb making wine setup and config a one click thing.
- Windows 7 support ending, windows 10 sucks donkey balls (Cortana, offline account option now removed as well)
- Intel, AMD graphics drivers at near parity, Nvidia catching up
- Google making a game streaming service (Stadia) means they obviously plan to port games to linux, it can't work without it
- Vulkan API is going to replace both legacy OpenGL and Direct3D (easier to port, even more cross platform engines as well)
- Lutris > playonlinux, making installing top titles extremely easy.

What do you think guys, is 2020 the YEAR OF THE LINUX GAMING DESKTOP?

A leftist /tech/ board is great! Let's use it more, comrades!
Are any oldfags around who had the joy to come in contact with pic related or other micro electronics from real socialistic states? Sadly I was born too late to have a opinion on their products.

I read DDR lightbulbs were more durable than the western ones because they had no planned obsolesence; what do you think would our society today look like, if more elecronic products like smartphones were designed with a much longer lifetime in mind? Would the use-value of the products stay the same over time, or would it decrease with technical progress?

R: 28 / I: 4 / P: 21

Code of Conduct(s)

Perhaps a declaration of technical principles would be a better term, but regardless the necessity of finding a means (beyond licenses out of necessity) to secure our software from outside meddling seems to be all the more essential the more I think about it. There are approximately 90 CVE's (70% due to memory safety) in each Linux kernel major version, many of which remain outstanding even after moving to the next version, with the average lifespan between 3 and 6 years for "high" and "critical" bugs. The Linux kernel is now approaching 28 million lines of poorly documented code, making it completely beyond what a actual audit is capable of assessing, beyond comprehension. More than this the development of the kernel and funding of the foundation are almost entirely in corporate hands. Linux is but a example, every large component of major infrastructure (and rest assured if it's major infrastructure it will become large) suffers from similar plights.

What I'm not attempting to advance here is the suckless philosophy. In my opinion suckless goes beyond attempting to restrict the scope of their projects to an obsession with SLOC to the point of harming correctness and completeness (for a sound list of necessary features see here: They do not document their programs, following the mantra that code is documentation (which is true but insufficient). Additionally they fail to critique the accepted protocols and divisions of applications, which would allow them to not only make more correct complete software, but also to make in aggregate simpler software. As a example why make a separate windowing system, terminal multiplexer, terminal emulator, and text editor when these things could all be combined as extensions of one another. Why separate your text editor from your web browser? Why work with text streams and the file system instead of having a single address space? Why take X-Server for granted rather than building of Linux's frame-buffer.

What issues is it that I'm pointing at here exactly:
a) scope creep
b) illiterate programming
c) unquestioned assumptions (primarily those given to us by unix)
d) over-optimization (understandability, and completeness should be prioritized over micro-optimizations)
e) insecure technologies (for example unassisted manual memory management, and unchecked type wraps)
f) incomplete software (corner cases handled etc)

Can you think of any more, or a consolidation of the terms listed here?

What should Education under a Leftist system look like? The current system obviously doesn't work as can be seen by the large amounts of dropouts and general scorn and dissatisfaction that is directed towards the system.

I'm personally leaning towards the Sudbury Model of Education, essentially the government, school, and parents have no say in what is taught (preventing bias and the brainwashing type of education in modern public and religious schools).
The school's rules as well as other actions are decided by a democratic "School Meeting" consisting of Staff members and the entire Student Population, each has an equal vote and the staff possesses no veto power. Meaning that the school is mostly run by the students, there is no curriculum and no classes, the students decide what to learn, how to do it, and can ask other students or staff for assistance if they wish.
There are no divisions by age or skill meaning that younger students can interact with older ones at will and vice versa, allowing for older students to act as big brothers/sisters to younger students giving them a chance to develop greater empathy and responsibility while giving younger students the ability to find mentors (that they can personally identify with, unlike the ones assigned under current mentor-ship or tutoring programs).

It's worked very well already in the few schools that have tried it:

What would be other good ideas and ways to reform the current system?

R: 3 / I: 0 / P: 22

I've been trying to find some more information on the original systems operating in the Soviet Union. Especially those earlier systems that showed some promise and interesting features. I've been looking specifically at the BESM-6 due to the ample documentation available. The most interesting features to me are the system of modes, and bit packing, both of which seem very odd but interesting to me, oh also it's RISC which is nice. The CPU was also developed under the name Elbrus into the late 80's which is unique, and was reasonably competitive at the time. The Elbrus-3 which was a completely new ISA with novel VLIW capabilities was also competitive.

Would any of you happen to have any information on the MIR «Машина для Инженерных Расчётов» machines? I'm struggling to find any information on them but they sound fascinating especially concerning "a hardware implementation of a high-level programming language capable of symbolic manipulations" which reminds me of the exceptional Scheme-48. Also it seems to be immensely capable for its size. Thanks in advance!

Revolutionary tech work

I have knowledge for FreeBSD/Linux system administration and programming skills in C, C++ and Lisp. What's the best way to use these for revolutionary work?

I thought of making an application useful for punks, bums and people living an anarchist lifestyle but these people usually either can't afford or choose not to use this kind of technology. I thought of an application that could help anarchists organize but I'm thinking it could also be used against us, because it could help fascist groups identify and find us as much as it could help anarchists find and help each other. This is dangerous because it's as useful for fascist missions as it is for anti-fascist/anarchist ones. Otherwise, hosting something like an IRC platform and creating an application to ease its use could be nice but it's already being done by IRC channels, Facebook/Messenger groups and Discord groups, and it still excludes people who don't have access to this kind of technology. The goal in making a new application would thus be to help people help others, or to make the use of the application by indoctrinated people useful to anarchists without them having to use the application. I can't find any interesting idea fitting one of these descriptions.

Right now the only thing I can see is contributing to open source software that's already being used as backbones for other revolutionary software, like news sites, blogs, applications, etc. to contribute indirectly to these while having as big an impact as possible (contributing to a library used by many platforms helps more platforms than directly contributing to one). That would be low-level stuff like nginx, widely used libraries, an IRC daemon used by IRC networks hosting leftist channels, etc.

About the FSF, contributing to software of theirs that interest me like emacs would only be useful for other programmers, who, by that fact, should already have enough talent to take care of their own and thus should be helping others. This goes for many projects by GNU and the FSF, which are often aimed at corporations and corporate pawns to make them dependent on their software and leech for donations to the foundation. In other words, the software is made to help capitalists who have money to give to the FSF. Also, contributing to GNU projects would force me to voluntarily give the copyright of my contribution to the FSF, thus alienating me of my own work. Maintaining intellectual ownership over my contribution is important to me, because even though I'm using a free license, I want to be recognized for it. The fruit of my labour is mine, made for others, and the way the FSF does things goes against that. Contributing to FreeBSD, on the other hand, would give me this, even though it has the same issue of being aimed at capitalists who have money to give to the FreeBSD Foundation.

What does /tech/ do to help people with their tech skills?

Privacy general

Comrades, we need a thread on privacy. Any decent activist should try ways of staying anonymous on the web and prevent being tracked by governments and corporations.

General tips

* Use free software as much as you can.

* Use GNU/Linux and keep it up-to-date, to be sure that you don't have unpatched security exploits

* Don't use Flash Player, use youtube-dl instead for watching streaming videos online

* Do not use Google, use DuckDuckGo or StartPage instead

* Use a password manager like Keepass or for GNU/Linux users keepassx. Create new passwords for every site that you visit and use a strong password as a master password. A tip for easy remembering of your master password is to use a sentence. "i fucking love cookies and tits!" with extra capital characters etc. is easier to remember than some random characters and long enough to prevent brute force attacks of any kind.

* Use the Tor Browser Bundle if you really want to stay anonymous.

* Go to Preferences -> History and set History to "Never remember history".

* See for additional tweaks: and

* Use uBlock Origin for preventing tracking etc. Bonus: use hard-mode to manually whitelist external domains on sites. Don't use uBlock but be sure to use uBlock Origin

* HTTPS Everywhere

* DecentralEyes: prevents CDN hosting from tracking you (Google for Jquery etc.)

* Self Destructing Cookies: only allow cookies that you choose to allow

* Encrypt your hard drive or home partition at least

* If you use GNU/Linux, you can try to restrict systemd or syslog from logging.

* Use a distribution which takes security seriously. Also, be sure that you don't install a lot of things outside the repository. It will cover most of your needs.

Real life tips

* Pay with cash if you can

Feel free to provide tips to each other comrades!

Lokinet General

I don't know if I am the only person here who knows what lokinet is, but, basically lokinet is an encryption service provider that acts like tor; tor in the sense that it encrypts your packets with multi-layer encryption and bounces them around through a series of relays.

What makes it different is that it also acts like i2p in the sense that it also encrypts the encrypted packets in a secure SSL tunnel while bouncing them around making it truly anonymous.

It's also a decentralized network of relays and nodes of which anyone can spring one up and become a part of and on top of that you can use it as your default DNS provider meaning you can use this network as a vpn with out having to go through shady capitalistic datamines claiming to protect your data.

The down side is it's small right now and not a lot of people use it. It's fast though.

Furthermore, I can't seem to get the relays you need when you try to use lokinet as a VPN to work. I spoke with the staff on their IRC network and they told me the relays are down for those specifically.

I don't know if they ever got them up.

How the fuck has anyone gotten this piece of shit to fucking function?

I finally managed to figure out in order to post you need to get an ID from zeroID but after I did that it wouldn't post while I was using tor. Like what the fuck? So I wait again, and attempt to make a post, after getting my cert, with out tor on and then i'm getting the stupid "Your post is Xbytes > 0" Error.

AFTER SETTING IT UP FOR TOR WHICH WAS ALSO A HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS. I had to find out the hard way that the apt package, as usual, is fucked.

Ergo, had to compile it.
