Cataclysm: DDA Comrade 06/11/2020 (Thu) 08:28:46 No. 1642 [Reply] [Last]
>mysterious plague ravages world >lockdown imposed >waves of unrest and rioting break out >fake war between america and china distracts from crisis >turns out it was all the the result of extradimensional zombie cthulhu Is CDDA the unintentional game of the year for 2020? Post-apocalyptic survival roguelike, get it here: https://cataclysmdda.org/ Also, get the only good tileset here: https://github.com/SomeDeadGuy/UndeadPeopleTileset
Can someone write a short starter's guide? I get into the game and have no clue what to do
While it's a bit outdated, the wiki is a useful aid, in particular there's a set of guides, such as this one about surviving through the first day: http://cddawiki.chezzo.com/cdda_wiki/index.php?title=The_First_Day Before that, remember to play the tutorial, to familiarize yourself with the UI.
After attempting to play the game properly like a fuckin dumbass I made a throwaway character as a half-fish mutant, hijacked a military humvee with a full tank of gas and did doughnuts in a dead suburb running over zombies, mutants and warlocks until I smashed into a church dying instantly. CDDA was my first roguelike and it absolutely hooked me for a year. I would probably still play it if I had the time.

Let's create a FOnline 2 faction Anonymous Gamer 05/07/2020 (Thu) 19:07:56 No. 1 [Reply] [Last]
fuck that 76 crap, this is true fallout(I hope you've all played the og game). we need 500k caps to create a faction, I've allready gathered 1230. Beginner's guide: https://wiki.fonline2.com/Beginner%27s_Guide just some quick tipps: 1.the place were you start, there's some flint on the ground, look arround and take it, craft a "primitive tool" using it and chop some of the trees. wood is usefull to craft all sort of things. 2.you can interact with trashcans and other such things to scavenge crafting materials. 3.write down your password(and even name) somewhere, there doesn't seem to be a way to recover them if you forget them.

>>1 Haven't played since literal years, was part of the TTTLA. Good times, but dunno if I will ever return, I mean, the gameplay is pretty meh and I try to not start playing another mmo. >>417 >>417 Tropico 4, when I played it and got the mechanics was easy as fuck, normal that the capitalist faction is happy, it's almost impossible to fail in that game.
>>416 All you have to do to appease Capitalists is make a lot of money, which, coincidentally, is also what you have to do before you can accomplish anything else. There is no reason not to have at least 80% with every faction, although I sometimes go full Fedora mode and never build any religious buildings just because I can. It is kind of hard, because you have to make sure entertainment, housing, medical, etc all stay really high to compensate for everyone's abysmal Religious satisfaction, but after you get Newspapers and Schools indoctrinating everyone into Militant and Communist the Religious faction just fades away.
I never got into playing it after the first Tropico, because I heard they're the same and they just keep remaking the game the same way.
>>418 >have multiple death squads patrolling just shooting capitalists and religious fucks on sight people saying violence dont work just dont use it correctly >Newspapers and Schools indoctrinating everyone into Militant and Communist the Religious faction just fades away. nice

2D pixel art > modern 3D art No matter how high a resolution you render at, no matter how many bloated lighting effects you shove into a game, you will never be able to compete with the love and care put into hand-placed pixels. Prove me wrong. You can't.

Ok, I guess I am just gonna drop some of my hot takes about graphics: AoE2, an RTS from the 1999's, looks better than than every single other RTS up to basically Starcraft 2. Even Dawn of War 2, which came out a whole decade later, looks like shit in comparison when you look from the modern day. The lesson? If you can't use 3D competantly, or if it doesn't add anything, don't do it. Le realism meme is a fucking waste of time. First, it never did and most likely never will look real. RDR3, the single most over-designed game probably ever tried its damnedest, but the characters still unmistakably aren't real humans, not even close. And the worst part is if you fuck up at this goal, which seems pretty common, you'll create uncanny valley abominations (ME:A, to some slight extent Control come to mind). While it is nice to see graphical fidelity improve over time, this does not mean that you need to bend over backwards for perfect realism. WoW is the single best looking 3D game right now, and basically was for as long as it existed. This relates back to the previous point. 3D is not a good method for realism, so why not scrap the idea and embrace the strengths of such graphics? WoW, through the use of highly stylized and cartooney graphical design shows this. Don't do graphics for graphics sake. Pretty obvious point I believe. Does anyone remember "Rise: Son of Rome" or "Order [19th century date]"? Not really, because they were only there to show ebin new tech. However, let's then look at the previously mentioned Control. At first glance it might seem that it too is only a glorified graphical presentation, however here the tech doesn't come as a detriment to the other content of the game, and comes as a nice complement to it. The "let's just don't care about graphics" argument is pretty stupid. While there is validity to the point, primarily that a ton of modern games are golden graphics-glazed turds, it doesn't change the fact that Dwarf Fortress, the game adhering to this philosophy, is pretty fucking unplayable without modded tilesets, and even then, due to how even these are pretty rough, have it's over-simplistic graphics hurt the over all enjoyability.

>>1587 >WoW is the single best looking 3D game right now, and basically was for as long as it existed. I am pretty sure this is either bait or you are posting from 2004, but I'll reply anyway. Have you not seen BotW? Sekiro? If we're strictly discussing MMOs, FF14 crushes WoW when it comes to art and has been doing so for 10 years now. Even GW2 looks much better. It always bored me that the armor/clothes in WoW were all strictly confined to the shape of the model itself (except for head and shoulder armor). The pieces do not "pop out" of the model. It makes characters incredibly dull to look at because their silhouettes are all more or less exactly the same. Compare with this FF14 screenshot. The armor is original and much more interesting to look at, the silhouette varies wildly between characters with the same base model. That's not even mentioning the environments, which also look better than WoW, and guild housing which has an enormous amount of cool items to decorate with. But anyway I agree with you wholeheartedly that realism fucking sucks, as does the barrier to entry for DF. I can't play Path of Exile for the same reason, it looks hideous.
>>1587 >if it doesn't add anything, don't do it. I agree with this point, but you also can say the same about pixel shit. Company of Heroes for example is a 3D RTS by design and would not work as a 2D game no matter how pretty you make the pixel art (or hand drawing). In contrast, in Age of Empires III the 3D didn't add anything but unnecessary and tedious camera management, reduced the size of maps (muh circles) and was probably a cynical business decision to move graphic cards in the mid 00s. >WoW is the single best looking 3D game right now Wait you're absolutely delusional lol.

>>1605 >Company of Heroes for example is a 3D RTS by design and would not work as a 2D game no matter how pretty you make the pixel art (or hand drawing) A great example of this is UFO:AI, an X-COM knockoff built on the Quake II engine. Though just a normal overhead TBT game UI-wise, it uses the the 3D models to determine where bullets hit and contact explosives detonate using 3D collision detection, stealth/visibility, and physics simulation with level geometry to calculate how things like grenades bounce and roll, instead of just doing tabletop-style dicerolls. This also means switching to a soldier's 1st-person view to check LoS/LoF is sometimes useful. As such, UFO:AI using 3D graphics, even when inspired by a game (X-COM) that was already mechanically 3D using 2D graphics, adds something that would be mechanically impossible with 2D graphics.

I'm a fan of Sora. Great controls and you don't die in one hit if you hit a bullet, but can dash over lasers (only if you hit missiles without dashing do you take damage.) Dashing raises your heat though which causes you to take more damage if you get hit later. There's actually a lot of depth, and I wish the creator would make a sequel instead of continuing to be a salary worker who also develops DLC for 100% Orange Juice in his free time. It feels like a waste of his talents.

>>5568 I stopped playing Kaiserreich for the same reason.
Haven't played Kaiserreich since March. I was playing as Brazil and I went down National Populism and reestablish the Monarchy. Last thing I was doing was sending troops to Canada to support them against the Combined Syndicates. Never got back to it and my computer sustained water damage so can't go back now.
>>5570 Fucking traitor As the CSA I swiftly and ruthlessly crushed the Canadian army and almost conquered Canada before mercifully letting them be so I could crush the West and the Longists It wasn’t until the Weltkrieg that I returned, the fools left their mainland totally undefended to battle Britain and France. They fell within weeks. To ensure the damn Northern bastards would never rise again I made Quebec into its own sovereign nation while turning both countries socialist. Once Germany is finally defeated I will invade India and finally hang the Bastard Exile King once and for all.
>>5570 >>5571 Lol, but see that's the problem, the AI doesn't know how to play at all so once you know the game everything is easy. That's why I wanna try play with humanz. Anyways, anyone who wants to play leftypol HOI, please join this link. https://discord.gg/4qa6p2J

My CityState review Anonymous Comrade 11/30/2019 (Sat) 20:46:47 No. 5554 [Reply] [Last]
This is copypasted from /leftypol/, in case it gets deleted over there for offtopic or whatever.

Hello, I played the game for a good 10 hours (though half of that time I was only half playing and watching YT) so I can report back on how it went.

Overall, the comments that other people made are correct, it is impossible to play the game as a communist. I was of course expecting the abstractions of playing a Neolib citybuilder attempted to model communism, but I wasn't expecting how broken the game's core systems are.

I started out the game but quickly realised that in this game, you can't build a bridge over a river that is more than 1 tile wide. So, I nuked my save and went back to the terraforming stage.

After modifying the map some, I built a tiny little commie hamlet, with all lower class (that's what they're called in this game) trailer parks. I found it kind of funny how lower class residential buildings always have grey wasteland type terrain around them, even when they instantly are building on a fresh green forest, as if their slovenly ways drain the life from the very soil around them and they instantly create a trashpit to live in.

The game's systems are quite oblique, and there's no construction of for example power or water infrastructure, or schools, police, firefighters, so to increase living standards I had to just pop up the sliders in the economy tab for "healthcare" "education" and "security and justice".

Anyway, we quite quickly reached 'Utopian' level living standards, which I was quite happy with, but things didn't seem to be quite working as I would have liked. My answers to the political issues that had been coming through had not exactly endeared me to the upper classes, which I wasn't really expecting, but what I had overlooked was that this game diverges from Simcity 4's mechanics.

You see, in Simcity 4, you have Residential, commercial, and industrial demand, and then each of those has lower, middle, and high income demands. So for example, you can have a city with almost all lower and middle income residents but have plenty of fancy high income tech factories and the like.

However, in Citystate, there is only lower, middle, and upper income demand, and commercial and industrial buildings can't grow above the first tier of development without middle and higher income demand. So, if no upper class people want to live in your city, your factories can't grow to higher levels.

This left me a bit stuck for knowing what to do, but things had become even worse, because my open borders policy for the past years had led to a quickly spiralling problem of 'informal settlers'. Essentially, through a combination of factors I didn't really understand, almost all immigrants had settled in slum tiles that popped up rather than in growing my residential tiles to higher levels.

Eventually I noticed that there were even little 'caravan' tiles of a crowd of migrants that would come in from the sides of the map to your city and then create a new slum tile. Apparently, one way to deal with this issue is by building walls or army bases but I didn't do that, obviously. I eventually made a concession to the gravity of the situation and put my immigration policies to neutral, but the damage had already been done, and my city now had about 80,000 slumdwellers, which was more than the entire employed workforce that lived in residential areas. My 'quality of life' meter still read 'utopian', yet the majority of people were unemployed and living in favelas. My city was in a death spiral, and I was now losing a lot of money each month. What could I do?
5 posts and 3 images omitted.
>>5559
As I understand it, Simcity 4 had rudimentary agent simulation (people living in houses had jobs which they had to travel to and back through your transport network), and it could run cities of millions of people
>>5560
I'm sure hacks that give roughly correct impression are possible, especially if the road geometry in a city-game is 90° angles only. You can fix movement patterns between agents in certain ways that you don't even have to do collision detection / collision prevention by AIs for >99.99 % of pairs, because they are logically prevented by the basic patterns of movement. You can have different zoom-levels of agent simulation. With the zoomed-out version the one that really counts in the end and that works in a more aggregated way (say 1 agent representing 100 people), and a more zoomed-in version (with actors literally only becoming visible, and only becoming real, when zooming in on a small part of the map) where you get a very small population of relatively clever AIs acting within boundaries set by the zoomed-out computation and not affecting the zoomed-out computation at all. Eye-candy, basically. You can read up on results from traffic studies, then do a top-down implementation with centrally steered actors roughly mimicking the results of these interactions – simulating the simulation, so to speak.
>>5561
...well, don't ask me chief, I just like growing pretty skyscrapers.
I've been trying out this game. To repeat what the OP essentially said, the game operates on capitalist logic and actually trying to play the as any kind of communist simply does not work. It grows for a while, but after you run out of natural resources you're really just fucked. It might work if farmlands weren't so pitiful, but they don't employ hardly anybody and they produce pennies.
>>5563 Honestly, a lot of city builder sims don't interest me as much anymore because they so tightly rely upon capitalism. Especially the historical period ones where it's just assumed that to develop better technology you have to embrace MORE CAPITALISM. Anno 2070 looks pretty interesting though since you can either play as a capitalist or an environmentalist in 2070 after capitalists fucked the world with Global Warming and flooded it. I really should try it.
