bowden is usually hilarious but this gross mischaracterization of marxism is ridiculous. He conflates marxism/historical materialism/ communism. He takes for granted all the grandiose concepts such as 'human nature', ascribing it his personal definition fraught with incoherence and contradiction with literally no justification. He makes the fallacious (((them))) argument with claims about how many communist party members were jewish derived directly from his arse (the real numbers are less than 10%). He completely misunderstands Gramsci's theory of hegemony supplanting the Marxist notions of base and superstructure, confusing it with the Frankfurt school's 'cultural turn' in their later work. His points about the limitations of Marxist thought, namely its disregard for psychological nuance has been addressed by marxist thinkers since the 60s - namely through Marcuse, Althusser etc At the end of the day, Marxism doesn't need to entail some perfect theory of human existence, it is primarily concerned with the critique of our current conditions of social organisation, understanding Man as a being that responds to his surroundings, with the power in some cases to choose how he responds. This is the power of leftist thought that Bowden waves away as utopian, without understanding that man's ability to change his condition is part of the human spirit he claims to defend.
The dude said some pretty interesting stuff sometimes but he was not nearly as intelligent as he thought he was, he's too sentimental to take seriously, like all conservatives.
